Eligibility Criteria
Nationality:
- For IAS and IPS: Candidate must be a citizen of India.
- For other services: Candidate must be either.
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Educational Qualification:
- Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
Age Limit (as of August 1, 2025):
- Minimum Age: 21 years
- Maximum Age: 32 years
Age Relaxation:
- SC/ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- PwBD: 10 years
- Ex-Servicemen: 5 years
Number of Attempts:
- General: 6
- OBC: 9
- SC/ST: Unlimited (up to age limit)

Selection Process
The UPSC CSE is conducted in three stages.
- Preliminary Examination (Objective Type): Serves as a screening test.
- Main Examination (Descriptive Type): Consists of nine papers, including essay and general studies papers.
- Personality Test (Interview): Assesses the candidate’s suitability for a career in civil services.
